Residency Requirements:
There is no residency requirement for the filing spouse if the
responding spouse is a resident of Iowa and has been personally served
with the petition for dissolution of marriage. Otherwise there is a
one-year residency requirement. In addition, there is a 90-day waiting
period prior to the dissolution of marriage becoming final.
Legal Separation:
Legal separation can only be grounded on irretrievable breakdown of
the marriage.
General Divorce Procedure:
There are no simplified divorce procedures in Iowa. Both spouses must
file financial affidavits with the petition for dissolution of marriage.

Grounds for Iowa Divorce:
The only ground for dissolution of marriage in the
state of Iowa is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.
Mediation or Counseling:
If the court determines the need for mediation, or if either spouse
requests counseling, the court will order it for up to 60 days.
Where to file for divorce:
In the county where either spouse resides.

Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.
